ELMs Writing

ELMs Writing is an automatically marked online writing assessment.

Teachers can select from five writing prompts covering narrative, descriptive, persuasive and report writing. All tasks have been directly designed to appeal to the range of experiences and interests of pupils. The engaging tasks inspire pupils to develop creative individual responses based on their knowledge and personal experience.

Pupils type their responses directly into the system, which then automatically marks their writing. The writing is given an aggregate score, and also marked on the skills summarised in the table below.

Detailed interactive group reports provide information on pupils’ strengths and weaknesses as well as linking to individual pupil responses and individual pupil reports.

Because data is currently being collected on pupil performance on the ELMs Writing tests, only raw score reports will be provided at this stage. A scale score will be developed once enough pilot data has been collected.
